We are all very aware of the next gen and their obsession with everything tech. When computer games were first introduced, they seemed mind numbingly stupid and existed for the pure purpose of entertainment and passing time. Parents complained endlessly about their children not doing anything but sitting in front of the computer screens all day. The PC became the new idiot box. However, a research project facilitated by students of chemistry at the University of Hull might change this stereotype attached to computer games.

This change is going to come around with the help of Minecraft. The concept of educational computer games is not avant-garde, and this project also builds around the very same concept. Minecraft is somewhat like a digital version of Lego where players are able to construct whatever they want -from fantasy cathedrals to a potato. This particular game does not have any end goal, and nobody wins anything, except it does help in the building a creative imagination.

The students of the University have now created a Minecraft world called MolCraft, which is made up of proteins and chemicals. Apart from that it also allows you to explore the molecules and their iron centres that carry oxygen around the muscles. You could even fly down a pore and flow across cell membranes. The game will be available as a free download for the PC edition of Minecraft and will come along with a bunch of games and quizzes.

The entire idea is to incorporate the lifestyle of the modern youngster who cannot concentrate on anything that is not visually appealing, and that of the education sector. One of the propositions is to make the entire process into that of an online learning environment, where students will be able to complete their course work, take quizzes and write assignments within the game. The procedure will also be teacher-student friendly, as the teacher will be able to see the student’s work and send them feedback while still being in the MolCraft world.

As Minecraft is a popular game and children are prone to getting a hang of anything new that comes in the form of a game, it will probably help in the building up of useful information in the brain. Computer games and other mindless activities have targeted the sub-conscious, but MolCraft is here to use the sub-conscious to store useful information in a creative way. You know what they say, “if you can’t beat it, then join it.”
